I recently made a PR that introduced scheduled post functionality into the API. This is all now live on the crust server for testing. I wanted to make a post describing the new endpoints and bring them to the attention of app developers as early as possible to solicit feedback.

I made a link post in two related communities, but it doesn’t show up on the second one from instances other than mine. I found out that the instance of the first (piefed) community has blocked the instance of the second (lemmy), so I think that may be the reason.

I wasn’t paying attention and accidentally posted an article to !nsl@lemmy.ca instead of !nwsl@lemmy.world last night. I used the “move post” feature to move it between the two communities, but now my “Vancouver Rise” flair from the NSL community is being added to every post I make, regardless of which community I post in. I don’t think this is a client error, because I see the flair when I go to look at comments like this one in my browser while logged out. Is this a bug? Is there something I did wrong?

Based on recent feedback, PieFed v1.8 includes functionality that lets instance admins flag accounts as being a “Reposter”. Other than putting a little icon next to their name this has no effect on anyone until viewers opt in to filtering based on this flag.

I don’t want to manually approve every follower but is there a way to remove specific followers and if there isn’t can this feature be added? And maybe a setting to hide the list of followers?

How do Tags works in a post? Does it make it visible to Mastodon in a way?

This is super low priority, but I just noticed that when I select “All” for all comms and then sort by Top, All Time, I see what appears to be a randomly ordered list of posts.

Reddit Enhancement Suite lets you create custom tags for users, and also lets you track how many times you’ve upvoted or downvoted a particular user. This information is private, and not visible to other users.

I encounter this sentiment fairly often. The use case seems to be approximately “I want to browse all for discoverability, but I don’t want to maintain an extensive blocklist myself,” which seems somewhat analogous to me to the use case we see for shared blocklists between fedi instances we see between admins of fedi instances. Piefed has a mechanism for building and sharing such a custom feed, so if we had a feature to block communities based on custom feeds, users could maintain custom feeds, like my Seattle feed, and then people who are interested in avoiding Seattle content can block my feed. I think it could be implemented similarly to following a custom feed such that if new Seattle communities appear and I can add them to my custom feed, then it would be blocked for users who block that custom feed without needing to update their own blocklists. They might could even be composable – perhaps if I had a blocklist for each neighborhood in my city, maybe I could be able to compose them as part of the city custom feed. The existing set of topics would meet the needs of the user in the linked comment – they could block the topic “Non-American Football (Soccer)” and avoid all soccer content, or “Sports” to avoid all sports content.

Apparently Lemmy turns my backslashes (used to escape round brackets inside a link) into forward slashes, leading to Lemmy users complaining:

Meaning that a link post automatically extracts some meta info - every time it’s clicked, not only when it’s created. Because it appears that Lemmy doesn’t automatically do it once at posting time.

If there is a post where a comment has been marked as the solution you can’t tell until you open the post. I think you should be able to see from the front page that it has been solved.

Tabletop Sentinel are cool and have both Mastodon and !tabletopsentinel@ttrpg.network (this is included at the bottom, so IMO this is official). But this leads to separation of comments. To be precise: I used the export feature on piefed.zip. The resulting .json file seems to contain all my blocks and other settings but as far as I can see (I already started manually adjusting some basic stuff) nothing actually got imported, and there was no error message.

I used to tap the number in mobile while in the profile to see it broken down but it’s not working for me lately.

EDIT: Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Lots of support for simply banning or flagging as a bot, and I’m going to add functionality for flagging as a reposter, then letting people filter on it. Instance admins can apply whatever response they prefer.

It looks like there are multiple post types on Piefed (link, image, poll, text, etc.), and the Interstellar client throws an error for me when I try to create a text post on it. It says that the link cannot be null, as well as the alt text (neither of which are relevant for a text post).

I tried to unblock the user https://piefed.social/u/%25d8%25a7%25d9%2584%25d9%2584%25d9%2587@lemmy.world (shown as الله in the user interface) but I got the following error message in the console:

idk whether this is the right place to ask this stuff. when i see people getting banned, i often go through their mod log to check out what they got banned for. oftentimes, the bans are reasonable, i.e. if it’s a 2-day old account with 0 posts and 15 comments and all of these commends are offensive.

I admit that I blocked way too many people and communities when I started using PieFed. I now wonder how I could easily start from scratch by emptying the block list since the manual way would take me too much time.

I took a look into post.post_ranking which is an implementation of what has been described by Amir Salihefendic in 2015.

Currently, it is possible to crosspost links, but not images. I recently tried to share an image across two communities and had to create two separate posts. It would be a great if image crossposting could be supported in the future.

Hi, I’m new to piefed and like it but when subscribing to a community from a post on the feed it loses place and jumps back to the top. This also happens when blocking and is very annoying as I use that feature a lot. If you click through to a community and subscribe/block from the banner it doesn’t do that but that’s a hassle when you’re looking for an efficient way to stop seeing loli anime.

I moderate a community from a dead instance and want to leave the community I moderate. But when I go to Settings > Moderator, I don’t see an option to leave.

Here is something I find myself wishing for in Piefed: A “suggest a community” option - because not everyone has the time or energy to start and manage their own, maybe if it gets a certain vote and someone volunteers as moderator it gets created.

It seems @zootweetmirrorbot@masto.ai has gone somewhat off the rails, and is repeatedly posting the same wine night tweet from the Maryland Zoo. I like following the account, so I don’t want to block it permanently; instead, I’d like to mute it for a couple of days to give the maintainer some time to figure out and fix what’s gone wrong, similar to what I can do on mastodon.

I have no formal education on voting systems, so if someone can enlighten me with more info I’d appreciate it. But it occurs to me that being a member in good standing – in any social context, not just social media – gives more weight to your opinions and thus, your votes.

This seems like a client issue rather than a piefed issue, but since it seems to affect every client, Piefed is the common denominator.

I created a community and selected searching for moderators option, and I see the little message on the community saying “This community needs more moderators. Contact the piefed.social admin team to apply.”, and some other communities have messages displaying similar. Would it not make more sense for this to tell the user to contact the community’s moderators? If not, would it make more sense for there to instead be a button that links to a way to contact the admins themselves if that is necessary?

I have to assume it’s related to anti-AI measures put in place, but for the last week or so I’ve been bouncing between my piefed.social and piefed.zip logins because one will randomly start doing the are you human auto-CAPTCHA in a loop that never ends, but I’ll be able to log in to the other normally. This first happened to me with .social about 10 days ago for at least a whole day. Then it came back. Went out again a day later. I swapped to .zip for a week, but now .zip is doing the Cloudflare thing and .social is fine. I only see the actual behavior in the browser (FF or derivative), but when using Voyager on mobile the symptom is just that the API queries time out or fail, but I’m guessing that it is the same cause.

So after the change to not auto approve followers I changed my settings to approve them. I just had one and I did not approve it but then when I look at my followers the new follower is listed. Is this working as inteneded? Also can we drop followers. Personally im not doing anything in particular of import or running communities or anything else that would make me a public figure so I don’t want any followers really. I mean if I interacted with someone and they contacted me maybe but honestly I would like an auto deny follow requests.

I’ve been using the Microblog feature to crosspost content from some Mastodon instances into one of the threadiverse communities. First off, thank you for working on these features. I’m definitely excited to be able to pull in more content to communities.

I didn’t find a setting to prevent users and bots from following my piefed account without my approval. Is that just not supposed to be there?

I was trying to upload an image in a comment. After messing with it for a while, I figured out that I get a button to do the upload only if I have Markdown turned off. Is this something others are seeing too?

The recent vote quota has been a hot topic and I’m curious about its effects on the site, the feature seems to target power users but I’m wondering about the knock-off effect on content in the platform, since we know about the 90-9-1 rule that applies to most online communities where 90% lurk, 1% post and 9% engage with the posts, I’m concerned that having implemented a feature specifically designed to limit that 10% minority that create the content that the rest consume, have you noticed any issues with content dropping? is there any way to track that? do you know of users who have left because of it? I myself used PieFed before but now I’m using Reddit more, I would understand rate limits but vote quotas are a deal breaker for me whether or not I reach the limit, something about it rubs me the wrong way, and the fact it’s enabled by default on every instance? it feels like we’re punishing away the people who actually keep the platform alive and I wonder if anyone has data on whether this has measurably changed posting behavior or if it’s just a theoretical

Until some time ago (a few weeks or so), I’m pretty sure I could still come across comments written by users I blocked. I know that because I started to tag the users because of that. Now I’ve noted that not only comments by blocked users are completely hidden from me, but the entire thread starting from them, including responses by other users, is invisible.

EDITED: I hate deleting things because I think it can confuse people who saw it and now its gone but this was due to me stupidly checking the low bandwidth mode in settings.

I do not see any comments on e.g. piefed.ca so the comment may not have federated.

I finally got around to testing the “follow accounts” feature that was in the latest piefed and it’s awesome The pixelfed integration is very fun — following photographers feels very natural, and gets a lot of image content into my feed instead of just endless links. It does look like loops works too, but I could only see a privacy guides account so I didn’t follow it. I did manage to follow a couple of Bluesky accounts via bsky.brid.gy, but I can’t see any of the Twitter mirrors (like sportsbots.xyz), though I suspect that’s because a lot of those early Twitter shovels ended up on blocklists because they’re technically bots. My favorite follows are definitely publications — there’s a Graphic Policy account on sfba.social and a BBC news account from flipboard.com that fit in great in my feed. Definitely the biggest shortcoming is that there is no way to fetch an account that isn’t already known to your instance (I was hoping to get the Shiba every hour or the capybara every hour accounts, but alas), or a good way to search for accounts on larger instances, like mastodon.social, so I’m curious: what accounts have you found that are a good follow from piefed?

Some (or maybe all?) of the time, posts I’ve previously voted on seem to show now visual indicator. When I click again, the number changes in the opposite direction as expected meaning I undid some previous vote. I’m just using this in firefox on PC. Is anyone else seeing this? I can definitely see the style directly after I vote but before I refresh the page. Thanks!
