Hi. I’ve set up a new single-user instance for myself today and I’m trying to create a local community.

I find posts and comments from Mastodon to be almost unreadable because they are loaded with hashtags in-line with the content.

With Hetzner’s price rises taking effect, I’m moving piefed.social to somewhere else. Most likely it’ll be during a quiet time when few people will notice, around 00:00 to 3:00 UTC on Saturday.

I have heard people talk about tagging people instead of blocking them and I did not think much about it. I had a person with a one month history though who had some comments that had me evaluating them for a block. Their history is just to small atm. So I thought. Hey this would be great for some sort of tag like under review or probation or something so I can remember to evaluate down the line. I looked around but did not see anything. I think its very possible people are talking about something that is specific to an app or maybe lemmy has it. On the other hand maybe I am just missing how to do it. So this is a question or an ask depending.

I like posts to be properly tagged, but sometimes I don’t have the time. An idea would be to have an auto-assigned role so that 20% of users who spend the most time in a community gain the ability to curate post tags, improving discovery of old posts.

When attempting to create a community with the URL c/MindfulMaverick, I encounter the error message: “[This name is in use already.]” However, no community by that name currently exists. It’s possible the system is incorrectly flagging a conflict with my username rather than an existing community. In fact, browsing https://piefed.zip/c/mindfulmaverick redirects me to https://piefed.zip/community/add_local, suggesting the name is not actually taken.

Hello. I thought I could use my Lemmy login details to log into PieFed, but it isn’t working and had to create a separate account. Can you please clarify?

I’m having trouble seeing functional differences at least in my limited ways of using the platform, between blorp & interstellar. Blorp probably fits my screen a little better. How have you decided on a default between these and/or others and what am I missing? Thanks.

I have two communities on SDF and I’d like to move them to Piefed. But the SDF instance is dead.

If you go into a community there won’t be a ‘home’ css class so you’ll see image and video posts in there.

So currently, we have two different closed-off developer chats on Zulip and Matrix. This means, that new devs will be confused about which channel to join and experienced devs have to actively look around in both channels for questions to answer. This seems like a really inefficient system, so we should at least decide on one official communication channel.

It shouldn’t be too hard to have a client track 20 minutes in a given day then upload it to the website.

As I understand, there are currently no real guidelines for this, even though AI is currently a big topic in FOSS. In my opinion, AI can be quite dangerous for free software and that’s why we really need to discuss how we can address this issue. Here are some of the reasons for that:

When I click my profile and view comments, nothing shows up. I’m assuming this was because my most recent comment was over a year ago. Going to test it by commenting on this post. But seems like a bug, the profile tab should show all comments and posts, not just from the past year.

I’m curious if this is an oversight, an intentional design decision, or a bug. If it’s just an oversight, it’d be nice if blocked communities no longer appeared on the communities page; hence why I’m flairing this as both a question and a feature request.

I created this community yesterday. A few folks joined, and now the count sits at 46 subscribers with <46 local subscribers on any Lemmy instance I visit (here or here for instance). But on Piefed, it’s 16 subscribers and 17 local 🙂

are there any plans to extend the rss feeds to other possibilities like those in Lemmy or Reddit? Search related, user personal feeds (as in my home or my notifications as a secret rss I can use), ranking related (top month top week etc) and so on.

I’m not sure if this is an existing feature since I mostly use an app with Piefed. I like how some forums would alert you before posting if during the time it takes to write your post, some new comments were posted already.

I can’t access piefed on my phone anymore, just spits out a 403. Can access it here fine. Did I get caught in some blanket IP ban?

I changed my theme to the Hercules 1982 theme. Its very nice, other than the colors are a bit off for my taste. I’d like to change those.

We had an issue today in which it seemed like we were getting flooded with posts from a new member. I found the current settings were either too drastic (unfederate community, block user) or weren’t available (those in title), so I settled on temporarily restricting posts to mods only, plus adding a warning message for other posters, which unfortunately was again on the drastic side. (that message now appears all over the place)

I just checked Blorp, Summit, Interstellar, and Voyager and none have this feature.

I’m not sure how to word this properly. I followed like 4 different Peertube communities. Looking at the Communities drop down at the top I don’t know really which one is local, which one has the most users, etc. Is there a way to like add weight so that the Peertube with the most comments or something is first?

Is that different for Lemmy? If so, why is PieFed’s approach to private communities different from Lemmy’s?

v1.6.10 includes endpoints for Feeds.

Currently, if you copy a range of cells in a spreadsheet program like LibreOffice Calc, Microslop Excel, Google Sheets, etc. and then paste into a textbox in PieFed, it will upload that as an image file representing that range of data. If that is what a user intends to do, it works great for that. But I think that more often than not, what the user actually wants to do when pasting in from a spreadsheet is for that data to be a markdown-formatted table, not an image file. I would like to see this as the default behaviour for PieFed.

Are there plans to make private communities accessible/usable without an account on the same instance ? Is it possible to switch from private to public (and vice versa)?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. How do I go back to where I was in my feed after clicking on a story? I see there are options at the top like, Home, Community, etc, but how do I get back to where I was?

Piefed currently has anonymous — or more accurately, pseudonymous, voting.

Is there a tool that automates transferring of blocks from a Lemmy account to a Piefed account? I’m one of those people that curates All and have thousands of blocked communities so it’s not feasible to manually transfer that.

i honestly am very confused, i tried to make a post in a community and i got this 503 error page and then when i went to the main piefed.social page i was logged out and when i tried to log back in i got the 503 error page and now no matter what i just get the error page u less i turn on a vpn? its only on my other phone though? the phone im using now works fine with no vpn but the other one only works with a vpn. i even tried clearing the cache and all the site data but its still the 503 error without the vpn on. does anyone know how i can fix this?

I imported my Lemmy account but noticed some blocked people weren’t transferred over. Most of the ones that didn’t cross over seem to be from specific instances, such as kbin.social, leminal.space, etc. But one was from lemmy.ml; others were imported fine but one user was not for some reason. There’s around four dozen blocked accounts and I didn’t check them all but it seems like most made it over.

The one thing puts me off Piefed is the UI. I tried the different available themes, but outside of Irix - 1998, nothing felt right. Irix - 1998 itself is too bright, so i tried it with dark reader but it still feel off put

I’m not sure if this is being worked on or has already been suggested, but this seems to be a feature missing from Piefed. I personally used to use it when I was on Lemmy but haven’t been able to on Piefed. I understand if this is difficult to implement but I feel like it would be a good security feature that seems to oddly be missing from Piefed.

I tried out so far voyager and interstellar. It seems that both don’t support hashtags. I can see them but I cannot click on them like the web version.

Today I was just thinking about how PieFed (and the fediverse in general) reminds me of an earlier internet that I used to like, where “social media” was just phpBB forums running on old computers in peoples’ basements. And I thought, “I just wish PieFed looked a little different to reflect that. Too bad there aren’t any themes for it.”

Not sure if this is the right place to report this, but any time I enter anything into ‘communities’ tab of search, the whole page freezes and dies. Tried on multiple browsers and devices.

If PieFed is so great at replacing chatrooms (like Discord), why are we on zulip and Matrix?

I tested on two browsers, the latter without any “protection” or addons, and I tried the same post on a Lemmy instance, where it’s fine. It’s clearly not happening on my side, and OP didn’t do anything wrong either.
