Event times confusion

submitted by

I made my first two PieFed “Event” posts, but I don’t understand the times being shown.

I manually wrote in the titles the advertised times, which both use US Eastern time. The times of day for the events are 7.5 hours apart (12.00 & 19.30). But PieFed events shows the times of day as 1.5 hours apart (17.00 & 18.30).

Re times I input into PieFed event settings:

  • “Disciples of the 36th Chamber": I did that with the correct time for my local time zone (America/Mexico), 11.00. It shows up for me as 17.00 GMT -6 . (17.00 is the event time in UTC . My UTC offset is -6.)
  • “First Blood": I decided to try America/New York 19.30. It shows up for me as 18.30 GMT-6 . (18.30 is the event time in my local time zone . My UTC offset is -6.)
  1. Why does PieFed show time for one event in UTC, but time for the other in my local time?
  2. Is there a way to make clear what time zone (UTC, local, other) is actually being shown?

Please don’t put the time in the title.

PieFed will show the time to the viewer in their timezone.

Why does it show the event in UTC, not my timezone, for the “Disciples” watch party?

There is a confusing thing about the post creation form - there are TWO timezone fields - one for the event time and the other for scheduling when the post will be published. I think that you were using the wrong timezone field. We need to fix that.

I did a test. While logged in as you I made a test event, with the time of it set to 11 AM Mexico City time.

Check this out, we’re going to refer to it later:

That is the corresponding times in different timezones. We need those times to match with what we get.

By looking at the HTML I can see that 11AM was stored in the database as UTC:

Then when I viewed the page some javascript ran which converted the output from UTC to my local time (NZ):

Everything seems to be working as intended.

Thanks for looking into this issue.

Re scheduled timezone, no, I didn’t use that.

Also I just tried another event, and after publishing, the time & date were shown to me in UTC, not local. And when I went to edit to try to fix it, the event time fields then showed the time & date in UTC… but the time zone as mine 😂

I have to run now, so I deleted that event and will try again tomorrow when I have more time.

Do you have javascript disabled? Are there any errors in your JS console?

Do you have javascript disabled?

Not AFAIK. Using Zen Browser on Linux, with multiple extensions like uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger etc. I don’t know if they affect any of the javascript.

Are there any errors in your JS console?

Would the “Browser Console” in Zen be the same as a JS console? If so, here is the output viewing the Piefed.social homepage. There appear to be several errors but I’ve no idea what they mean 😊

While none of those errors seem directly related to PieFed, it would be interesting to see if disabling your extensions made the PieFed problem go away. It might be possible that an extension is interfering - if you enable them slowly, one at a time, refreshing the PieFed page after each one, then you’ll see which extension it is.

If we narrow it down to a particular extension then I might be able to change PieFed to avoid it.

I did a test event post in Playground, and the time is displayed to me correctly this time (both on the post page itself and on the Piefed.social main page). Without yet disabling any browser extensions.

Shall I go ahead with trying with all extensions off, re-enabling one at a time? Or has a change been made that renders such testing unnecessary?

EDIT: Now I see that Piefed is showing the wrong time in on the Playground page: now it says “23.30 GMT-6”.
EDIT 2: Also now on the main Piefed.social page, it has changed from 18.30 GMT-6 to 23.30 GMT-6.

SO weird!

Maybe it’s a fingerprinting-resistance thing.

Disabling all extensions does not fix the issue. All pages still showing incorrect start & finish times.
