chat.piefed.social is live - join us on Zulip!
EDIT 11 Apr 2026: chat.piefed.social is now deprecated, use !piefed_dev@piefed.social instead.
PieFed has a chat room now, at https://chat.piefed.social
We’re using Zulip for this, which is an interesting combination of forum / chat room with strong support for threaded discussions.
You can use your piefed.social login with chat.piefed.social, BUT you need to use your email address instead of your user name. Use the same password.
The login details used by chat.piefed.social are synced with piefed.social when you log in to piefed.social or when you set a new password in your settings so if you haven’t done either of those recently then log out of piefed.social and log back in.
You can also just make an account at https://chat.piefed.social/register/ if you don’t have a piefed.social account.
This chat.piefed.social does not replace our Matrix rooms, it is an additional option for those who don’t use Matrix.

is piefed social down?
It was.
I believe I’ve found the root cause and fixed it but we’ll see.
This is interesting to me as I have been to lazy to do much other fediverse things like matrix mainly because I have to make another account. I think being able to connect to other services with another fediverse login would go a long way to get other aspects become more popular. Like how google and microsoft and facebook and such let you login to stuff with their system.
Cool that you’re using Zulip server. And Zulip has a new mobile app out, also available via F-Droid.
Great news!
i dont understand why we would want to splinter the community in seperate software? Why not just have a chatroom style thread so the data etc is still indexed by search engines and on piefed
Wow. This is such an interesting idea. Very cool!
Chat rooms sound intriguing. I’d love to try it out.
I think the fediverse should look for XMPP for chat solution. It is what comes closest to its philosophy
I agree.
I tried to create a XMPP server, twice. I failed once but one of them I got running but then I found it hard to get a decent desktop app which connected to it. By the end of the experiment I could see why XMPP didn’t take off.
I understand you
Is there any client for XMPP that support threads (https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0201.html)?
Last time I checked I couldn’t find any
Gajim is the favorite for threads https://gajim.org/
Desktop? For mobile I think Conversations has that feature, the one I use is a fork and it supports threads, although not as good as Discord IMO
Desktop indeed
When you say threads do you mean within a chatroom or something like an Elements/Discord structure with “channel” and “subchannel” because for the former there are decent options, but for the latter there is a lack of “spaces” being defined but it is in development by the Movim and Slidge devs. I went pretty far down this rabbit hole and ended on Zulip being the easiest FOSS drop-in for Discord that wasn’t Matrix, though people who manage to run it tend to love MatterMost.
Within a chatroom would be a first step, but I’ve noticed that the best is indeed to have a subchannel structure.
And yes, Zulip is the best one for long topic-based conversation, that’s why Piefed uses it, as stated in the OP :D
I realize there aren’t a lot of great options in this area but Zulip is confusing as fuck.
What do you find confusing?
Yeah it’s weird at first. I have a Rocket.Chat server ready to go if this doesn’t work out for that reason.
